William Ledbetter, the Prosper writer who worked in the aerospace industry before launching a career in the more speculative realm of space exploration, has won one of the most prestigious awards in science fiction and fantasy. Ledbetter’s novelette, “The Long Fall Up,” published in 2016 in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, took the top honor in its category at the Nebula Awards this weekend, beating out five competitors, including “The Orangery,” by Denton author Bonnie Jo Stufflebeam.

We talked to both Ledbetter and Stufflebeam shortly after they were nominated in April. Congratulations to both writers for proving that our neck of the woods can be fertile ground for imaginative storytelling.
