Medical City Dallas Hospital has opened its Chest Lung Evaluation And Resource, or CLEAR, Clinic that specializes in finding, diagnosing, and treating lung cancer in the early stages.
The Clinic, directed by thoracic surgeon Mitchell Magee, uses low-dose CT scans for people who have risk factors used in the National Lung Screening Trial, first published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2011.This study shows that low-dose CT scans can reduce the lung cancer mortality rate by 20 percent compared to screening with a routine chest x-ray. According to the release, approximately 5 percent of abnormal scans will lead to a lung cancer diagnosis.
