DB14

DB14 continues through March with a solid lineup up of artists from in and out of the area. All the shows in the biennial have been sharply conceived and well-mounted; some were well attended, others not so much. Maybe its just me, but the accomplished nature of this endeavor seems to emphasize the  echo chamber within which art exists in Dallas. DB14 is shouting loudly, but I still only hear our own voices echoing back.

Common Sense by Nicolas G Miller at The Reading Room — March 15, 6-9 p.m. 3715 Parry Avenue, Dallas, TX 75226.

Here’s The Reading Room with another challenging artist who approaches the intersection between text and object with a refined aesthetic. Miller is an artist from Marfa, and in addition to nifty editions, he works with sound and sculpture. The weekend’s exhibition will include manipulated sound pulled from Stephen Spielberg’s films.

Divided Sight by Terrell James and A Magpie and a Rainbow by Darryl Lauster at Barry Whistler Gallery — March 15, 6-8 p.m. 2909-B Canton St. Dallas, TX 75226.

Terrell James’ pretty paintings draw heavily from an ab ex genealogy, while Lauster’s whimsical cultural constructions make him feel like the grandchild of Robert Rauchenberg.

Word!: A Group Exhibition at The Public Trust –March 15, 7-9 p.m. 2919-Commerce St in Dallas, TX 75226.

Brian Gibb has organized a group exhibition with artists, including Mel Bochner, Lawrence Lee, Ryan Humphrey, William Binnie, Matthew Cusick, Cody Hudson, Taro-Kun, and Lucia Simek whose work explores text and image in a variety of mediums with an emphasis on how new media affects language. (Disclosure: Simek is my significant other, but I don’t see a reason why that conflict of interest should prohibit me from recommending the only local gallery showing Mel Bochner this weekend.)

Before and After by Francis Giampietro at Beefhaus — March 15, 6-8 p.m. 885 Exposition Ave, Dallas, Texas 75226.

For some reason, I keep forgetting that I’ve seen the work of Francis Giampietro. Then I’m reminded of the little vial he exhibited at Deep Ellum Windows some time ago. It claimed to contain some terrible, deadly virus. It probably didn’t, but I wasn’t going to check. And that play of language on object made that little, diminutive thing something frightening and powerful. Not every artist can manage to accomplish that, yet alone through such an effortless, seemingly toss-off gesture.
