COVID-19 Bulletin (08/16/21)

The more contagious, more powerful Lambda variant is now in Dallas. There were 915 new cases on Friday.

On Friday, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins reported 915 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths on Friday. “It appears that only 3.5% of people vaccinated have developed breakthrough cases requiring hospitalization,” he tweeted.


Researchers at UT Southwestern have identified five cases of the lambda variant in Dallas. Though research is still being done, some studies have found it to be both more contagious and more resistant to vaccines than the original variant, though the vaccine still prevents most serious illness. The Dallas Morning News has more.


The fourth surge continues throughout North Texas, with 2,653 COVID-19 patients in the hospital in North Texas o Friday. That represents more than 18 percent of available bed capacity and nearly 42 percent of adult ICU patients. 


At Collin College, the school’s dean of nursing has died from COVID-19. She is the second member of the school’s nursing faculty to die from the disease. Learn more with KERA.
