Contemporary homes often end up looking stark and uninviting due to the severe, clean lines associated with the style and lack of imagination on the part of the designer. But, in Oak Lawn, a neighborhood where anything can and often does go, this uniquely practical home stands out. View from the backyard unsightly? Choose the non-traditional route and place the pool in the front yard. Client loves to socialize. but relishes his downtime too? The home’s open floor plan encourages entertaining, while its walled-in pool, an extension of the house itself, ensures privacy. The hard vertical 1ines and rough texture of the building stone are softened with curves and the light emanating from the home’s many oversized windows.
In our quest to unearth the very best in Dallas home design, we were granted something most only dream of-an insider’s view into some of the most beautiful homes in the country. And we saw it all: Tudor manors complete with the requisite country garden; wine grottos and stone-crafted waterfalls; antique tile baths and hand-textured walls; limestone floors and scorched bamboo curtain rods. Hours spent thumbing through stacks of submissions convinced us of one thing: When it comes to our homes, Dallas style ranks up there with the best of them. Because we were limited to only three categories, in the end, we looked for the best of representative styles to select our very favorites as winners of the 1999 D Magazine Home Design Awards.

Space is all about light-according to the old design maxim-and light is the key to the non-traditional design of this traditional home. Windows and French doors allow sunlight to flood the interior, rooms that flow into each other give the illusion of wide-open spaces, and spring-colored fabrics exude brightness and warmth. But the furnishings give this home its character. To wit: The high-gloss woodwork, tile floors, and texturized fabrics chosen for this Los Arboles home manage to convey a sense of spaciousness without resorting to starkness. The effect: a home that is trendy and traditional at the same time.

Tomlin’s redesign of a Preston Hollow colonial takes a step into the 21st century yet remains purely classical, a fusion of Dallas’ sense of tradition and vision of the future. So the space age calls for metallics, but this design renders them organically, with gunmetal leather chairs in the family room. High-tech function is discreetly masked by hand-painting. The doors flanking the fireplace, painted with an Ikat-meets-radar signal design, hides a television and sound system in the family room.
