At Easter time, some people believe the only thing better than a chocolate rabbit is a real one. Sadly, the pets are often abandoned when families realize they are more work than they bargained for. Enter The Bunny Burrow Rabbit Rescue, a volunteer-run nonprofit that aims to rescue, foster, and find loving homes for cottontail companions. Megan Geller and Erin Ramsey, co-chairs of Bunny Burrow, advise prospective owners to do their rabbit research before committing. “People don’t view them the same way as a cat or dog,” Geller says. “Bunnies don’t love to be picked up; they don’t love to be cuddled. Some people have expectations that aren’t realistic.” Geller recommends that families have their rabbit spayed or neutered; train it consistently; and provide a large, indoor pen. If you’re willing to do the work, then hop to it.
