MAYBE WE SHOULD NAME IT AFTER BILLIE SOL

The Nolan Estes Educational Plaza, nee the A. Harris Shopping Center, and converted at a cost of $9.7 million – about $7 million over the original estimate – continues to meet with criticism for its name. In the first place, says school board member Jerry Bartos, singling out former Superintendent Estes for the honor violated DISD policy, which stipulates that living persons are ineligible. “History has to make its judgment. . . [the plaza] is a perfect example of why the regulation exists.”

By way of remedy, Bartos or the district’s community relations committee will probably bring the matter before the board, citing a regulation that does allow, between July 15 and August 1 of each year, renaming facilities stuck with “inappropriate” eponyms.
