Thumbs down to Governor Bill Clements for putting a kink in the process of getting funding for the Superconducting Super Collider. Clements called for an investigation into the national security implications of foreign investment in the collider, while at the same time saying the federal government should foot the bill. The Gov, as we well know, has a knack for bad timing, Some members of Congress were undoubtedly cool to the idea of funding the SSC without foreign investment, which is seen as a way of lessening the cost burden, and foreign investors were put off by Clements’s remarks. Sometimes the governor needs to just sit quietly in a corner and let other people do the thinking and the talking.
