The holiday season can be a busy time. Some resolution-makers put off going to the gym until the New Year—but Mike Modano, isn’t one of those people. The former Dallas Stars superstar and newest member of the Hockey Hall of Fame doesn’t trade in his workouts for Christmas movie marathons (though he does admit to being a sucker for the dessert table). I caught up with Mike Modano at the Hilton Anatole’s Sparkle! Spectacular to bring you the first of two very special holiday celebrity fitness guides.

The holiday season is always so busy, so if you’ve got 20 minutes to work out, what’s your routine?
I would probably do a four-station workout. I’m a big Tabata and CrossFit fan.

What’s your typical daily workout routine?
I would probably extend one of those workouts for a little bit longer than 20-minutes and add a 20-minute run. I do a lot of cardio with some weights, too—lots of reps with light weights.

What is your Christmas morning breakfast routine?
The usual: a big stack of egg white omelets with tomato and avocado, and I might throw a slice of wheat bread and a bowl of fruit in there, too.

What is your go-to cheat meal during the holiday season?
I’m a big dessert guy. I’ll eat anything and everything dessert-wise: cheesecake and cherry pie—usually a la mode.

What’s your favorite Christmas tune?
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

How do you define being healthy and fit?
It’s a lifestyle. It’s all about creating a routine and sticking to it. It’s hard at first, but it gets easier. The hard part is getting into that routine, but you gotta hang in there and stick through it. Give it three or four months and you’ll see some results.
