Ransomware Cleanup Price Tag More Than $8 Million. The Dallas City Council on Wednesday approved paying vendors that have helped the city address May’s ransomware attack, to the tune of more than $8 million in invoices so far. The city recently told the attorney general’s office that the personal information of more than 26,000 people—mostly city employees—had been compromised. 

Frisco Teen Struck By Car on First Day of School. Frisco Heritage High School sophomore Landon Bourque was hit by a car and killed Wednesday as he attempted to cross Independence Parkway near George Washington Drive on bicycle. The driver stopped and tried to render aid to the 15-year-old, police said, but he died of his injuries. It was the first day of school for Frisco ISD.

Dallas County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Fired After DWI. Lt. Michael Raley was fired by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office late last month after he was arrested for allegedly driving drunk. Raley was involved in a car crash in far northeast Dallas on July 8, and was also charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. He worked with the sheriff’s office for 18 years.

County Reports First West Nile Death. Dallas County Health and Human Services reported Wednesday that an Irving woman died of a more serious strain of West Nile Virus. There have been seven cases in the county, and two deaths in the state this year. Experts say that mosquitos are less active in temperatures greater than 95 degrees, and that Dallas has actually seen a 33-day drop in the number of days hospitable to mosquitos since 1979. So we’ve got that going for us, I guess?
