DOCTOR’S DEFENSE

YOUR STORY “SUFFERING FOR BEAUTY” [JULY] talks about a woman who had intense pain after C02 resurfacing by Dr. David Martin and portrays Dr. Martin as a bad guy. This part of the article is a total mischaracterization of what happened to this patient and what usually happens with this procedure. Dr. Martin himself was never called or asked any questions about this case by your writer. Dr. Martin is an excellent physician and plastic surgeon, he has done extensive advertising in your magazine before and does not deserve this put down by your magazine. You owe Dr. Martin an apology. I am ashamed of your magazine for doing this to one of our finest surgeons.

ALFRED R. ANTONETTI, M.D.

DALLAS

EDITOR’S NOTE: Our article was in no way critical of Dr. Mart in; in fact, the article twice states that he made two house calls and gave the patient great treatment. The patient’s complaint was with the advertising that portrayed the operation as relatively painless-which in her case, it was not.

A POSITIVE EFFECT

THANK YOU FOR THE UNBIASED SEGMENT YOU did on Bishop Dunne High School in “The Best Prep Schools in Dallas” [April]. The power of the press is astonishing ! Your article has had such a positive effect on our school. Enrollment is up by more than 100 students!

While we would like to give you complete credit for our increased enrollment and interest from all over the city, we do have a lot of other wonderful new things happening that can also take credit for the increase: an Eighth Grade Honors Academy, several new computer labs, a new writing lab; and our mentor program pairs upperclassmen with eighth and ninth grade students to help them get acclimated to high school.

DEFICIENT DISTINCTION

WICK ALLISON’S SEPTEMBER EDITORIAL “Creating Wealth” calling on Dallas conservatives to support a new sports arena makes a historically curious but politically deficient distinction between federal government intrusions into the private sector and those sponsored by local government.

In one respect, Mr. Allison is attempting to apply the doctrine of “subsidiarity,” whose objective is the maximum feasible decentralization of authority-i.e., what might be inappropriate for the federal government might be appropriate for the local government.

In a more important respect, however, a conservative should always opt for a solution that defers to the inherent wisdom of the marketplace rather than relying on the usual imprudence of government subsidies.

The call for public money to subsidize a sports arena in Dallas is especially objectionable because of our local government’s continuing disdain for carrying out their fundamental responsibilities of restoring and maintaining our infrastructure and providing basic services.

PARDON OUR FRENCH

People who write in glass houses should not throw stones. Suzanne Hough tells us how irritating menu misspellings are in “Remember the a la Mode” [August]. I loved the article but on the same page she notes the opening of Chez Gerard’s new restaurant as La Vendou. The restaurant is named after a town in the south of France named Lavendou.

CENSOR THE PROFANITY

Why was it necessary for Skip Bayless to not bleep out Troy Aikman’s foul language from his article about the fight between Aikman and Switzer [September] ? We have children in our homes, you know.
