Bill Cawley: A Shift in Priorities

When I was younger, my focus was on the money side of deals. Today my focus is on building or creating the right environment and project for our clients and the market.

As I get older, my priorities are changing. I only want to work on projects I can be proud of!

When I was younger, my focus was on the money side of deals. Today my focus is on building or creating the right environment and project for our clients. If it’s a development project or a building we are buying, what’s the right type of building for the market? Does it protect the environment; use energy efficiently; provide an efficient, cost-effective environment for our tenants; and fill a market need?

Whatever you do should never be about the money. Always focus on what’s the best possible product you can create. Do and be the best you can be and the money will follow.

In business and in life, relationships are everything. Life brings many people into your life. Good friends and trusted relationships are hard to find. As life moves on, I find my world is getting a bit smaller. I lean into the relationships I have more than I try to create new ones. When you have people you can rely on, why not expand the relationship? You will find life to be much easier. I want to focus on the relationships that matter. Fewer, deeper relationships are in my future.

I love spending time in business with young professionals who have all of their dreams in front of them. There is nothing better than to mentor a young person who is committed to working hard to create his or her future. All they need is guidance, and it’s a great use of your time. I would rather spend time guiding a young person’s career than anything else. Surround yourself with smart young people and enjoy the ride and the benefits.

I now want to spend my time on experiences more than I want more stuff. Every day I care less about having more possessions but crave spending time creating great experiences with people I care about and love. Life is short, so use your time wisely.

Work smart, not long. Spend your time efficiently, focus while you are at work, get your work done then go spend time where it really matters—at home with your family.
