Dallas Police and Fire Pension Bill Signed into Law. Yesterday, Gov. Abbott made the bill that’s supposed to save the pension system from insolvency official, following unanimous approval in the House and Senate. Beginning September 1, the bill mandates a new board of trustees, cuts to benefits, and millions more in taxpayer dollars. Effective immediately, there’s a ban on big lump-sum withdrawals for retirees.

Nancy Pelosi Denounces Sanctuary Cities Law at Dallas Rally. Yesterday at a rally in Dallas, Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called Texas’ new sanctuary cities law—meant to curb such cities by letting officers check residents’ immigration status—”an act of cowardice.” Later at a news conference at a Dallas union hall, Pelosi continued: “Here we have the vitality of America, all of these newcomers to our country and some of them here for a long time. They are instilling fear in them. That’s just the wrong thing to do. Instead, we should be working together for comprehensive immigration reform.”

Dallas-Based Energy Transfer Partners Opens Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline is expected to begin shipping oil today. But the Dallas company will be investigated on whether it got rid of too many trees on the route and whether the discovery of Native American artifacts was reported incorrectly. Energy Transfer Partners maintains innocence on their intention.
