Roll Call: Education Stories of Note 6.13.14

Judge grants AFT temporary injunction in home rule decision
|

1. Roll Call is pretty late today. I’ve been waiting to see if we would have a ruling on the AFT lawsuit brought against DISD for the way it elected/appointed the district advisory committee (DAC) that selected four teachers for the home rule commission. And now we have it: The judge for the case has issued a temporary injunction (effectively ruling that AFT has a point here) and will hear from both sides of the suit at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Adjust your popcorn-preparing plans accordingly.

2. Yesterday afternoon, the DISD board delayed a vote to determine the manner in which it puts together the home rule commission. I’ll have a post this afternoon with thoughts on this meeting and a preview for what to expect next week.

3. This is a fantastic story, well worth your time, if you want to understand the difficult spot unions have put themselves in — essentially arguing for the status quo in large, poor-performing urban school districts, and the political repercussions of doing so — read this piece in Politico. Also, you’ll see that the “billionaires taking over our schools” language is part of a national strategy. (One that, I would suggest, does as much to alienate the vast middle than any other political education strategy out there.)
