If you turn to page 106 in the May 1983 issue of D Magazine you’ll come across a story about the vanishing ranches of North Texas.

“We native Texans were all weaned on tales of men grappling with the elements and wild animals to make the business of cattle ranching profitable,” writes Fran Gardner Youssef. “But those sweaty labors seem a far cry from the sterile, computerized moneymaking industry that characterizes today’s Texas cattle business…Education, polish and business savvy may have been added over the years, but Texas still breeds its own brand of rancher.”

Youssef profiles Bill Rasor (Rasor Stock Farm), B.F. Phillips (The Philips Ranch), Owen and Rutledge Haggard (Haggard Enterprises), Lee Causey (The Star C Ranch), Bob and Cheryl McCally (McCally Arabians), and Perry Bolin (Bolin Hereford Ranch).
