Here’s Who Is Coming to Dallas This Weekend: November 9-12

The weather may be chilly, but the acts coming to North Texas this weekend are pretty darn hot. From rap, to country, to Southern rock, and plenty of funny people, the options are plentiful.

The Flaming Lips

November 9, 8 p.m.| Music Hall at Fair Park

It’s roughly the 20th anniversary of the Flaming Lips’ album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (which spawned the official rock song of Oklahoma, “Do You Realize?”), and the band is traveling south to Dallas to celebrate. If you’ve never been to a Flaming Lips show, be prepared for a visual treat, too.  Get tickets

Ali Wong

November 10, 7 p.m.| Music Hall at Fair Park

Ali Wong commanded national attention with her first Netflix special, Baby Cobra, and the two follow-ups, Hard Knock Wife and Don Wong. The stand-up comedian, writer, and actress has also starred in the movie Always Be My Maybe, and co-leads and executive producing the animated show Tuca and Bertie with Tiffany Haddish.  Get tickets

John Buffalo

November 10, 7:45 p.m.| The Kessler

John Buffalo is the latest project by Dallas-based singer-songwriter John Dufilho, known for his work with The Deathray Davies, CLIFFFS, I Love Math, and John Singer Sergeant, as well as his collaborations with Ben Kweller and Rhett Miller. Two years ago, Dufilho underwent two heart bypass surgeries and nearly died. During his recovery, he was unable to play live instruments, which led to the all-electronic, self-titled album, which will be released on November 10 by local label State Fair Records. Get tickets

This Is Important Live!

November 10, 8 p.m.| Texas Trust Credit Union Theater, Grand Prairie

Comedians and actors Adam Devine (Kelvin Gemstone of the Righteous Gemstones and Bumper of Pitch Perfect), Anders Holm, Blake Anderson, and Kyle Newacheck will bring the live version of their This Is Important podcast to Grand Prairie this weekend. The quartet was also responsible for the Comedy Central sitcom Workaholics, and their podcast delves into, shall we say, a wide array of topics, including “grown men fighting children” and “naked grandmas.”  Get tickets

Lil Flip

November 10, 9 p.m.| Trees

Houston’s rap scene was put on the map thanks to artists like Lil’ Flip, who came up through Houston’s underground rap scene in the 90s before inking a recording contract in 1999. With hits like “The Way We Ball” and “Sunshine,” he grabbed the attention of established acts, appearing on Three Six Mafia’s “Ridin’ Spinners” and Ludacris’ “Screwed Up.” He’s released several albums and EPs since his last studio album, 2007’s I Need Mine, so expect plenty from that massive catalog.  Get tickets

Red Bull Batalla

November 11, 5:30 p.m.| South Side Ballroom

The world’s largest Spanish-language rap battle, Red Bull Batalla, will bring its U.S. national finals to Dallas on Saturday. Expect 16 of the nation’s top rappers battling out freestyle, all for the low price of $10 a ticket.  Get tickets

Turtle Creek Chorale

November 12, 7 p.m.| Holy Trinity Catholic Church

The Turtle Creek Chorale first performed at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in 1980, and the Chorale’s three ensembles—Chamber Chorus, Coloratura, and TerraVox—will perform “Border Songs” in English and Spanish on Sunday. The concert, which will tell the stories of immigrants, is “pay what you can.”  Get tickets

Drive-By Truckers

November 12, 8 p.m.| Tannahill’s Tavern and Music Hall, Fort Worth

It’s hard to believe that the Drive-By Truckers have been making music for almost 30 years, but it’s true, and we’re all old. The band is celebrating the re-release of The Dirty South with The Complete Dirty South, which boasts three new songs and some bonus vocals. Early James opens.  Get tickets
