Top of Mind: Habitat’s Public-Private Partnership is Changing South Dallas

Major initiatives the city of Dallas and others have in the hopper to jump-start Southern Dallas, with an estimated 2012 completion date:

DART: Extend Dallas Area Rapid Transit lines through Buckner by 2010.

RAIL DEVELOPMENT: Secure four major rail-station developments.


HIGHER ED: Boost enrollment at the Dallas campus of the University of North Texas from 1,700 to between 2,700 and 5,400.


TRINITY PROJECT: Complete the Buckeye and Santa Fe trails in the Trinity River Corridor project; begin extending levees; open the Texas Horse Park.

INLAND PORT: Complete the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train hub; work-force training in place at local educational institutions.

INDUSTRIAL PARKS: Build out 3 million square feet of industrial space in Southern Dallas business parks, with $250 million in new private investment and 2,000 new jobs.


HOUSING: Majority of Bexar Street project (upscale apartments, retail, and offices) done, with two similar projects on the way.


PUBLIC EDUCATION: Assuming it won the Broad Prize in 2010, the Dallas Independent School District is well into its goal of having its students graduate college-ready.
