Girls Inc. Dallas hosted the third session of their Power 2 the Girl Conference on April 29th. Over 500 girls from Mesquite High School, North Mesquite High School, School for the Talented and Gifted, and KIPP Truth Academy participated in this empowering event

Girls Inc.’s Power 2 the Girl conference, presented by Toyota, is themed “Power H.E.R (Health, Equity, and Reform)” and has provided girls in 6th-10th grade attending schools in underserved areas of Dallas the social and emotional tools they need to navigate this challenging time.

At this reform-themed event, sponsored by Allstate Insurance Company, girls learned about topics like injustice, discrimination, and bias. The session also equipped girls with the necessary tools to combat these issues in their own communities.

Girls heard from Dr. Sandra Chapman, Founder of Chap Equity. Dr. Chapman spoke to girls about implicit bias, equity, and identity, urging girls to examine unjust systems and take action against discrimination.

She also encouraged students to work together with other girls to fight for change. “There is strength in numbers!” she said. “This is not a time for us to be bringing each other down. Together, we can build our voice and create change.”

A teacher at Kipp Truth Academy said about the conference, “This conference gave our girls opportunities to grow as young women and empowered them to speak up for themselves!”

Elizabeth, a student who participated in the conference said she learned about bias and discrimination and hopes to combat these issues in the future. “Today I learned that a lot of people stereotype girls,” she said. “I want to learn how to change that and show people that we can do so much more than they think.”
