Nine of the top-rated hospitals in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Overall Hospital Quality Star Ranking ranking came from the Baylor Scott & White Health system, and two were Texas Health Resources facilities. Clements University Hospital rounded out the top-scoring hospitals.

Last month, CMS updated its ranking of thousands of acute care adult facilities nationwide. In North Texas, 12 received the top score of five stars, while only one facility received one star. Two top-ranked hospitals came from the Texas Health Resources facilities. Clements University Hospital rounded out the top-scoring hospitals.

CMS’ rank of the only one-star hospital in North Texas is a little more complicated. CMS reports the hospital’s name as Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – White Rock, but Baylor sold the hospital in 2018. The hospital that exists at the address listed in the CMS data now operates as White Rock Medical Center, which filed for bankruptcy last year (it has now emerged from bankruptcy) and is owned by California-based Pipeline Health System. The hospital was the region’s only one-star hospital in CMS’ ranking.

The Overall Star Rating is a summation of five areas of quality for each hospital and includes forty-six criteria. Of the five categories, mortality, safety, readmission, and patient experience are rated evenly, with timely and effective care counted about half as much toward the other categories’ score. Data came from several reporting systems, portals, and programs to complete the data, and hospitals that didn’t have all the data did not receive a score.

Nationwide, 10.5 percent of all hospitals evaluated received five stars. Only 5.4 percent received one star. North Texans should feel good about the region’s hospitals, as they vastly outperformed the nation as a whole. Of the 51 hospitals in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton counties that received scores from CMS, 24 percent received five stars, and less than 2 percent received one star.
