bidding adieu to summer

{Paletas — A perennial summer favorite of our crew}

Somehow summer (at least “summer” from the perspective of the school year calendar) seemed a blur this year. In the blink of an eye, I went from shuttling my girls from camp-to-camp and mitigating the implications of marathon swim sessions (shriveled fingers, insatiable hunger) to dusting off backpacks and lunch boxes.

We’re ready for the school year, excited about seeing our old buddies and craving a more steady routine for our days, but (despite the fact that it’s been the hottest in years), we had a rather excellent summer… My husband, girls and I are a bit melancholy to see it go.

So as a bit of an ode, I thought it would be fun to share a few of our favorite summer 2011 moments.

And we’d love to hear some of yours as well… feel free to share what you loved most about this summer in the comments section if you’re so inclined!

An end of summer trip to Marfa that was so successful we’re considering making it an annual family tradition. (More on the Marfa trip to come…)

Eating outside (ideally by a body of water of some variety)…

Tromping through rivers in the Hill Country (and watching my girls delight over catching tadpoles, chasing frogs and digging in muddy banks)…

“Craftapalooza” — DIY was unequivocally our favorite respite from the summer heat.  Some of our favorite projects included making marbled paper, painting, making clay beads, stringing necklaces out of found bits and the aforementioned clay beads and creating rubber stamps out of pencil erasers (among other diversions).  We’ll share some of these projects in more detail in the coming weeks.

Friday nights puttering around Oak Cliff…pizza at Eno’s, Sangria at Bolsa and (always) a hunk of chocolate from Dude Sweet.
