Blue Canyon Kitchen, Tavern, and Wine Bar in Rockwall

|

For Father’s day, I took dad and the family to Blue Canyon in Rockwall. It’s in a new development called “The Harbor” off Lake Ray Hubbard. It’s a handful of restaurants and shops, right on the water. Nice sunset views, and generally makes you feel like you’re somewhere besides Rockwall, Texas.

Jump for the good, and not so good.

The restaurant is decorated as an “Aspen” style lodge. Kind of strange considering you’re looking out at the water, but it was nicely done.  Being on the lake, some tables were full of sunburn couples, guys in tanktops, trunks, and flip-flops. Next to them were families in their Sunday best, but no one seemed to mind.

Service was attentive, but clueless. When asked about the Chicken with Mascarpone, the waiter replied that mascarpone was a “creamy vegetable, served as a side” with chicken breast. Mascarpone is a cheese, (and we’re still not sure how it was used), and the chicken came with everything but the breast.

Dad got the Salmon with Horseradish Potatoes and Root Beer Asparagus. The fish and asparagus were a little overcooked, but the potatoes were inedible. Far too much horseradish, to the point where it had to be a mistake.

There were highlights, like the Duck 2 Way. Duck breast and duct confit, with their version of corn bread. The duck was perfectly cooked, and so well seasoned, I may never eat chicken again. The mac and cheese (a side) was a winner, and the burger was also received well.

This place has potential, but the mistakes were sloppy, especially for the price point. I’d guess that most entrees would average around the $25 range. For that cost, something as simple as mashed potatoes should be spot on, and the waitstaff should know what they’re serving.
