Survey: 35 Percent of Physicians Saw Income Drop in 2012

Nearly 20 percent of physicians (18.7 percent) said their income fell more than 10 percent in 2012, compared to 2011. Overall, 34.6 percent saw a decline in income, according to a study by Physicians Practice. Most—38.2 percent—said their income for the year is about the same; 10.4 percent said it was up by less than 5 percent.

The annual survey collected responses from 1,311 physicians:

• 39.6 percent of respondents have been practicing for more than 20 years
• 56.2 percent are employed by hospitals
• 46.8 percent work 41-60 hours each week
• 36.3 percent said they pay up to $7,000 annually for malpractice insurance
• 59.6 percent said their revenue did not come from bonuses or other financial incentives
