Thumbs Down to the NAACP for appealing Federal Judge Barefoot Sanders’ decision in the Dallas school desegregation case. While intervenors from North and East Dallas and the black community also appealed the ruling, it was the NAACP that drew the school board and plaintiffs back into the judicial process. Thumbs Up to the Dallas School Board for trying to reverse its original vote to appeal. We share the concern that a majority of the board feels about Judge Sanders’ opinion, but we see nothing to be gained, at this point, by dragging the case on any longer. If and when federal law moves against busing, it will be an easy matter to go back to court and seek a new neighborhood remedy.
