Belo insiders say, since the arrival of Executive News Director Michael Valentine one year ago from WVEC-13-ABC in Norfolk, things have gone steadily downhill. A recent blowup with Karin Kelly reportedly caused the veteran reporter to walk, and rumors are that more will follow her out the door.
The Belo flagship, in the past year, has lost more than 75,000 households at 6 p.m., falling from a lofty 8.3 ratings to a 6.5, where fast-rising KTVT-11-CBS is nipping at its heels. In the February sweeps, at 10 p.m. WFAA clung to second behind KXAS-5-NBC, but only a half rating point ahead of KTVT.
