A Few Thoughts on Sherwin-Williams’ 2017 Color of the Year: ‘Poised Taupe’

As opposed to “hot mess taupe.”

Earlier this year, we spoke to Jackie Jordan, the lovely, brilliant, and now retired director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. She gave us some thoughtful insight into color forecasting, how new shades earn their names, and how her team arrived at 2016’s color of the year: “Alabaster.”  Last week, Sherwin-Williams unveiled the new color of the year, “Poised Taupe,” to The Today Show’s Kathie Lee and Hoda, and we have some questions.

  • What’s the opposite of “Poised Taupe?” “Hot Mess Taupe?”

  • Is the taupe itself poised, or are the semantics more in line with Kathie Lee’s statement: “We’re poised for our taupe?”

  • According to Sue Wadden, the new director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, the 2017 color of the year is “like gray and brown had a baby.” Should the name be “Bray?” Or “Grown?”

  • Who’s more likely to use “Poised Taupe” in their home: Kathie Lee or Hoda? (It’s Hoda, right?)

  • Why does Kathie Lee keep pronouncing the word taupe with such a hard “p?”

Stay poised, friends.
