In 1948, J. Robert Oppenheimer sent a telegram to Dr. Claire Chu’s grandfather, a prominent academic leader in war-torn China. “If there should be any steps that you would like to have me take in the next months to facilitate your coming to this country, please let us know.” President Gerald Ford later would award the National Medal of Science to professor S.S. Chern. Gradually, her grandfather’s vision dimmed due to cataracts, and he asked Dr. Chu to help him. For decades, she and her team have been dedicated to the application of the latest microsurgical techniques in cataract surgery. She has flourished in the Junior League of Dallas as well as in the UT Southwestern ophthalmology department. While she did not have the opportunity to provide cataract surgery for her grandfather, she looks forward to helping others achieve their vision potential.
