You hear it a lot: “This house is hot!” (And, honestly, in this market, with the crumbs of supply available, nearly every house is “hot.”)

But what does that really mean? Sometimes it’s the location (White Rock Lake, anyone?). Sometimes it’s the style. Sometimes it’s the age. Sometimes it’s a standout feature, like a fabulous pool or Dionysian wine fridge.

Other times, it’s the number of folks talking about the home. So, to determine the hottest properties of 2021, we rounded up your favorite homes in our Hot Property series over the past 12 months insane months of real estate. Enjoy.

(By the way, these are for looks only. They’re all off the market. Don’t act like you’re surprised.)

1. A Freshly Built Four-Bedroom in Little Forest Hills

Status: Off the market

Only a five-minute drive from the Dallas Arboretum, this Little Forest Hills home is a modern minimalist dream. The house, newly built in 2020, breathes fresh life into the neighborhood with its mixed materials, moody accents, and satisfyingly angular façade. Inside, polished concrete stretches across the ground floor and the marble waterfall island, plus the dry bar and wine fridge, make an ideal entertaining space that can easily spill out onto the spacious back patio.

2. An Interior Designer’s Midcentury Build in Lochwood

Status: Off the market

This 1962 home was newly renovated when Beyond Interior Design founder Juliana Oliveira got her hands on it. During her own remodel, Oliveira highlighted its midcentury modern design while bringing it into the 21st century. Although the entire house features smooth lines and modern touches, the backyard, with two separate lawns, space takes it to the next level. Built around the existing trees, the deck is at different heights, creating a lovely separation of spaces.

3. A Minimalist Build on Belmont Avenue

Status: Off the market

Live inside the box in this Belmont Avenue stunner. The contemporary new build’s exterior is understated, with black paneling and narrow, tall windows. Inside has all the markings of no-fuss minimalism. You won’t find any statement chandeliers, garish wallpapers, or even a mantel. Instead, you can bask in the serenity of clean white walls, airy 12-foot ceilings in the living room, and walnut cabinetry and quartz countertops throughout the kitchen and bathrooms.

4. A 1930s Storybook Home Near White Rock Lake

Status: Off the market

Once upon a time in 1936, prolific architect Charles Dilbeck built this storybook cottage. The stone-covered façade, vintage brick fireplace, and crown molding, plus the mossy, cobblestoned backyard, give the home plenty of character fit for a fairytale. But the home’s amenities, like the kitchen’s massive chrome fridge with wine storage, a fully updated loft living area, and the al-fresco kitchen give the spot all the reimagining it needs to captivate a modern audience.

5. A Lovely Transitional Home in the Heart of Lakewood

Status: Off the market

Is it possible for a house to feel both timeless and refreshingly modern at once? This Lakewood corner lot, with its traditional silhouette, simple landscaping, and modern accents certainly is. Just about every space is understated and airy, with pops of personality, like the foyer’s sunburst chandelier. Enjoy the cozy living area, or head out through the French doors to the backyard, which features a multi-level pool and spa and an in-ground trampoline.

6. A Reimagined 1940s Cottage Near White Rock Lake

8648 Forest Hills Boulevard.

Status: Off the market

Create Atelier has brought a charming old home into the modern era, just like the Dilbeck cottage. Despite the moody and dark façade, the house’s front porch and steps were specially designed for chatting with neighbors. Create Atelier kept some of the house’s original elements, like the hardwood floors and glass knobs on the closets, while updating the inside, like installing rift-cut white oak kitchen cabinets and vaulting the ceilings from eight to 18 feet.

7. A Chic Contemporary in Preston Hollow

Status: Off the market

This Preston Hollow modern marvel features clean lines, minimalist virtues, and bright white walls. However, modern certainly doesn’t discount personality. Every room of this contemporary house features its own flair. For example, the hall bathroom’s herringbone-tiled wall and fluted cabinetry is dark and moody, while the neutral marble waterfall island and white oak furnishings give the kitchen an earthy aesthetic, and the master bathroom and closet are larger and grander than some boutiques.

8. A Spacious Craftsman in Vickery Place

Status: Off the market

There’s something classic about a Craftsman, from the symmetrical style to tiered roof and wooden columns, and this fresh Vickery place house is as comforting and cozy as we could hope. Even though it’s huge. Lots of windows bathe the 3,483-square-foot home in natural light, and the roomy chef’s kitchen spills into the living room, creating a wonderful entertaining space, you’re not enjoying the dining room’s large wine cellar or the outdoor fireplace, of course.

9. A Creekside Beauty in Preston Hollow

Status: Off the market

We all can’t help but want to live in a Preston Hollow abode every now and then, especially this luxe 7,000-square-foot home, which sits on over an acre of lush, tree-covered land. Every room has walls of windows to show off the landscaping, which is truly the home’s pièce de resistance. A creek runs along the property’s edge, and the backyard includes a pool, a full-sized tennis court, and an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven.

10. A Sweet Home on Swiss Avenue

Status: Off the market

This Swiss Avenue home is the best of both worlds: close enough to Dallas’ heart for easy access, yet suburban enough to escape. Relax on the spacious front porch, in the media room, the sauna, or the show-stopping backyard, complete with a pool, spa, diving board, and outdoor kitchen. Or you can fix yourself a drink inside at the wet bar and marvel at the living room’s exposed beams, coffee-colored wood ceiling, and marble mantel.
