There’s nothing more depressing than receiving (or arranging!) a gorgeous floral arrangement only for it to wither up within a few days. So we’ve asked three floral companies — Branching Out, Dirt, and Dr. Delphinium — for a few tips on how to keeps your blooms fresh for longer. Here’s what they had to say:

Branching Out Floral & Event Design: When you’re arranging, make sure and put the stems in fresh water with a dash of bleach. The bleach keeps the bacteria away. Bacteria shorten the lifespan of your arrangement. Also, keep the water level in your container high—you will be amazed at how much water the flowers drink in one day. If your home is warm, they will probably drink more.

DIRT Design Studio: Always change the water/add water and cut the stems daily as well as spray the arrangements with a spray bottle daily.  Many flowers drink through their petals so this helps prolong the longevity of your arrangement a great deal.

Dr. DelphiniumTo make your lilies last longer and keep guests’ allergies from getting irritated, pluck off the anthers (the orange or yellow part of the stamen that hold the pollen)! This will slow down the lily’s maturation and keep them bloomed and beautiful for days more! Another good thing about this is that the breathtaking scent of the lily should still be preserved.
