Parkland Health & Hospital System’s emergency team got a kudos last week from the state of Texas for its role in helping treat wounded Dallas officers after an ambush downtown last July.

The staff of its emergency department and the Rees-Jones Trauma Center received the statewide Texas Preparedness Leadership Award for 2016, an honor for “outstanding service in response to the Dallas police shootings.” The award was given out during a ceremony in Galveston last weekend. The hospital treated seven shooting victims on July 7 while maintaining regular patient volumes—they cared for more than 300 non-affiliated patients as the officers were rushed in.

“Despite the tragedy that unfolded the night of July 7, Dallas saw the best of humanity when our city came together to support the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Area Rapid Transit officers, private citizens and their families during this senseless act of violence,” read a statement from Dr. Fred Cerise, Parkland’s President & Chief Executive Officer. “I am most proud of our Emergency Department and Rees-Jones Trauma staff, as well as the rest of the Parkland staff who, in the hours and days following the shooting, were determined to honor the value of all human life.”

Baylor University Medical Center treated the remaining seven patients, including the only two civilians wounded during the shooting. Learn more about the man who headed up Parkland’s trauma unit that night in this story from the October issue of D Magazine.
