What I’m Watching: the NHL Trade Deadline

Plus: Kyrie versus Durant, and another stiff Big 12 test for TCU.

The Mavericks had a miserable Sunday afternoon against the Lakers (at least Erykah Badu got some love), but the Stars finally took down another division leader in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. And it’s back to smooth sailing on the Jacob deGrom front, as the Rangers’ new ace threw his second bullpen of spring training on Sunday.

Here’s what I’m watching this week.

Wednesday, 3/1—Texas at TCU8 p.m., ESPN2

The Horned Frogs are just 8-8 in conference play, but the strength of the preposterously deep Big 12 has kept them firmly in the NCAA Tournament picture. Still, a win over a top-10 Texas team would have them breathing much easier as the calendar flips to March.

Friday, 3/3—The NHL Trade Deadline2 p.m.

The Stars fired their first salvo yesterday, sending enigmatic winger Denis Gurianov to Montreal for veteran Evegenii Dadonov. Is more coming? Our David Castillo hopes there will be, namely a defenseman, which may be more of a boon for Dallas’ flagging offense than a four-time 20-goal scorer like Dadonov (allow him to explain). Sean Shapiro will have more today on where the team stands with four days to go.

Sunday, 3/5—Suns at MavericksNoon, ABC

Imagine traveling back nine months ago, when these teams were midway through their second-round epic, and gauging Past You’s reaction to the news that the Mavericks would soon employ Kyrie Irving (in place of Jalen Brunson) while the Suns would line up with his old Brooklyn teammate Kevin Durant. Would Past You be weirded out? Probably. Would they want to see those old friends square off on opposite sides of older Western Conference rivals? Definitely.
