After two nurses died from fentanyl overdoses at UT Southwestern, The Dallas Morning News reports that the Drug Enforcement Agency is investigating the hospital, though the DEA and the U.S. attorney’s office did not confirm or deny the inquiry.
DMN confirmed the probe by requesting documents from UT Southwestern following the death of the nurses in 2016 and 2018. The federal agencies were notified of the request because the documents included correspondence between the health system, a federal prosecutor, and the DEA.
The nurses deaths prompted an inspection by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which found that UT Southwestern had not properly reported missing drugs, DMN reports. After the inspection, UT Southwestern reported 31 cases of missing drugs to the DEA. UT Southwestern says it has improved reporting of missing drugs since the inspection.
