The Need for Speed

Country clubs shift into high gear at Terrell’s Racer’s Ranch.

An afternoon of golf is great for some, but it never revved the engines of Bill Georgas and Dan Gage.

“It’s my father’s fault,” Georgas says. “He had a sports car when I was a baby, and I have that drone of the engine in my head.”

Georgas and Gage, both car enthusiasts and racing instructors, craved that country club, community feel but with a higher octane. Their hobby frequently took them to recreational racing venues across the U.S., where long wait times between track runs with little else in the way of entertainment gave them plenty of time to imagine their ideal facility.

“We thought, Wouldn’t it be nice if there were something else to do?” Gage says.

So the friends set about to create a new kind of country club. Racer’s Ranch is a 1,600-acre property 40 minutes east of Dallas that will feature a pool, clubhouse, equestrian club, 75 five-acre home sites, and a world-class, four-mile, Alan Wilson-designed road course. Drivers of any skill level will be able to put the pedal to the metal in their own vehicles, whether they’re souped-up speedsters or the sports cars they drive to work every day. The course is expected to be complete by this fall.

But more than the long list of amenities and promise of sweat-inducing speeds, Georgas and Gage are excited about the opportunity to share the experience with their children, who can race on an on-site kart track.

“It’s so much more than just being out on the track,” Georgas says. “In between sessions, I can be with my family,” presumably instilling the drone of the engines into the next generation.
