The news that the Marvel show The Gifted would not shoot its first season in Dallas may have deflated the notion that the city was set for a new renaissance in locally produced television drama, but local film crews can still take pride in the USA narco saga Queen of the South, which wrapped production of its second season here earlier this week. Said season premieres Thursday night at 9 p.m.
The crime drama is based on a hit Mexican telenovela, and its first season garnered respectable ratings and reviews—it may not quite reach the high standards set by much of the current glut of “prestige TV,” but its unpretentious basic cable soapiness can actually be pretty refreshing next to whatever ponderous new program HBO has rolled out.
