Opera Is Alive and Well in Dallas

The Opera America Conference this weekend aims to prove that.

I’m a big fan of opera. Always have been. The fact that my opera singer sister is about to graduate with her master’s degree in vocal performance from Eastman School of Music has only served to fuel the fire for my affinity for the theatrically sung word. One of my favorite operas is “The Marriage of Figaro,” which I’ve seen her perform in several times. While some people may think opera isn’t as relevant as it used to be, I beg to differ.

Beginning tomorrow through the weekend, the Opera America conference is going on in the Arts District, which is the largest contiguous arts district in the country. Even if you’re not a classically trained vocalist but are merely intrigued by opera, there will be a lot of performances and panel discussions to give you more insight into the current state of opera. Agustín Arteaga, director of the Dallas Museum of Art; Kevin Moriarty, artistic director for the Dallas Theater Center; and composer Jake Heggie are just a few of the speakers who will be sharing their thoughts on the Dallas arts scene. On Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Winspear, The Dallas Opera will be presenting “The Magic Piano,” which is great for kids as well as adults.

Opera isn’t just still relevant, it’s important.
