Off the Menu: Chicken and Roasted Veggie Sandwich at Olivella’s

Menu changes are exciting. Items that have passed their prime are removed, lending space to tantalizing new dishes. That restaurant you once loved, but now only frequent because it’s conveniently located next to the dry cleaners becomes new again. But what happens when your all-time favorite dish is removed? Truth is, that can be a devastating thing to find out.

Generally once an item is no longer on the menu, it’s gone forever, but sometimes restaurants can whip up former dishes when asked. That’s the case at Olivella’s anyway. The New York-style pizzeria recently expanded their menu, “The designer had a difficult time figuring out where to put everything,” owner Charlie Green recently explained. As a result a few dishes were axed, their chicken and roasted veggie sandwich with homemade truffle mayonnaise being one of them. While there isn’t room for the sandwich in print, in-the-known diners can still order the dish along with their Little Piggy sandwich: homemade mozzarella, tomato sauce, sausage and pancetta and the homemade mozzarella and veggie sandwich. All they have to do is ask.

Do you ever order off-the-menu items? What are some of your favorite secret dishes in town? I’d love to know.
