Better Recipes for Classic Football-Watching Nosh

Have your chili, sliders, hot wings, ribs, and pigs in blankets, and eat them too.

The Cowboys play the Rams this Sunday, and on Saturday, A&M plays SMU, and the Longhorns are matched against Kansas. I personally will be watching the Alabama – Florida game, but no matter. If you’re going to be watching football instead of partaking in Oktoberfest and other meaty weekend events, at least don’t bring home frozen pizza again.

There’s something comforting about the typical snacky, game-watching nosh we’re accustomed to, like wings, pizza, ribs, and beer. But that doesn’t mean it can’t simultaneously be good food.

Here are some approachable recipes you can make at home.

1. Here, four accomplished chefs share recipes for goat sliders, baby back ribs, homemade hot sauce and wings, and a rib-smoking tutorial. (FR)

2. What about pigs in a blanket? (I never understood why they’re not ‘pigs in blankets,’ because clearly they each have their own blanket, but I digress.) This version sounds pretty amazing. They are wrapped in pimento cheese blankets instead of plain Jane biscuits. (FR)

3. This chili is making my mouth water. It’s full of ancho and guajillo chiles as well as hominy. A nice change from the typical bean-and-beef. (F&W)

And grab some new seasonal beers from local breweries, while you’re at it. Punkel is for sale again from Lakewood Brewing, Rahr & Sons’ Oktoberfest is out, and Deep Ellum now has their Oak Cliff Coffee Ale on tap at a few Dallas bars.
