The Thumb Awards

Thumbs Down: To the County Commis-sioners Court for once again handing Al Maddox a county job. Maddox worked as a sheriffs deputy for many years, quit last January to run for sheriff, lost to Clarence Jones, was hired by the commissioners as a hospital district management analyst, was hired by new Sheriff Carl Thomas as a high level administrator, and was quickly fired by Thomas. But now he’s been hired by the commissioners again – as a “field appraiser trainee” for the Tax Assessor Collector. Multi-talented? Or … What are friends for?

Thumbs Up: To one Pam North, SMU student, for sheer entrepreneurial brilliance. Pam started an answering service for female students who are living with their boyfriends. So when Suzy’s parents call, Pam answers, poses as respectable roommate, and informs Mom and Dad that Suzy is studying in the library and will call them back. $25 a month per client. Brilliant.

Thumbs Down: To Congressman Jim Mattox for politicking at its two-faced best. After campaigning and winning on a platform of “no special interests,” Mattox voted in favor of common situs (full work site strike policy – an AFL-CIO banner issue), one of only seven Texas congressmen to do so. Mattox happens to have received more campaign funds from organized labor than any other Texas Congressman.

Thumbs Up: To Surtran, for finally establishing a bus route through Oak Cliff. as our Oak Cliff readers have long been trying to tell us, Oak Cliff is part of Dallas. One-third of Dallas, as a matter of fact.

Thumbs Down: To D Magazine. We thought we had a great little Thumbs Up item when we learned that the ordinance banning alcoholic beverages in certain Dallas parks had been rescinded. Until, upon doing a bit of research, we learned that it was rescinded more than a year ago.
