Thumbs Down to Dallas City Councilman Sid Stahl for abstaining from four council votes – because of conflicts of interest – during his first two weeks in office. Stahl, a lawyer whose firm is actively involved in zoning matters, chose to abstain because the votes involved zoning cases that could affect his law practice. A councilman who must shy away from zoning decisions, the largest single component of the council’s voting agenda, is impotent as a public official.
