D Home On the Road

A road trip to Houston yields a fabulous find.

Last weekend, I visited a friend (and former D Mag employee) who, due to her husband’s job, relocated to Houston a few years ago. (Cue sad trombone.) Though she’d had a long and tiring week taking care of a sick 17-month-old while her husband was away on business, my ever-thoughtful friend greeted me with a beautiful necklace she’d bought me as a belated birthday gift. “It’s from this awesome little pop-up shop down the street,” she told me. “They have the best deals on housewares and jewelry. I’m doing all of my Christmas shopping there.”

The next morning, when my friend came down with the bug her baby boy had been battling, my boyfriend and I decided to get out of her hair for a few hours. We hit up an adorable stretch of 19th Street in The Heights, a historic neighborhood where my friend lives, for some breakfast tacos and a cup of coffee. After a stop at Torchy’s and Boomtown Coffee, we indulged in a little window-shopping when lo and behold, we came upon the pop-up shop my friend had been talking about. It was called Blueprint Modern, and sure enough, they had beautiful serving dishes, cozy blankets, yummy-smelling candles, cute coasters, and more. The good news for Dallasites: You don’t have to take a road trip to Houston to score their lovely wares (though shopping and museum-hopping through H-Town is a lovely way to spend 48 hours). They have a web shop. I’m especially loving the Lucite antlers, Jill Rosenwald stoneware, and the Studio Patro tea towels (pictured above, from left).

Just don’t tell my friend I sent you. She’ll be mad that I gave away her secret holiday-shopping spot.
