Martellus Bennett Raps Up Observer Music Awards

photoAs is tradition at the Dallas Observer Music Awards, local celebrities took to the stage last night to present trophies, pimp new projects, and create awkward moments. Cheaters’ Joey Greco encouraged the crowd to follow him on Twitter (not likely), Willa Ford–alongside hubby Mike Modano–greeted the audience with a “What up, bitches” (clever), and my favorite, Robert Wilonsky, reminded us that he’s been around for all 21 of these annual shindigs (that’s a long time, Big Bob–looking good).

But none entertained like Martellus Bennett. The Dallas Cowboys tight end took up residence on the stage for what had to be longer than planned. Generally, presenters say hello, congratulate the winners, and move on. Not Marty B.

The rapper extraordinaire started out by treating the crowd to an original ditty. Then he did another. And another. I lost count of how many rhymes he actually spat, but his “set” felt almost as long as the regularly scheduled performers’. He also presented at the Quick music awards back in June, but they only let him perform one song, so I guess he saw this as his time to shine. Plus, there was a house party theme in play, complete with a couch and a keg onstage, so maybe he just felt at home. In any case, Marty B rapped–a lot–and the audience seemed to dig it. I’m no Mario Tarradell, but I’d say his tunes weren’t too shabby either. I mean, I did hear the phrase “make it rain” at least once, so he must be legit.

Things got a little weird during the awards presentation, though. When Taylor Young and John Pedigo accepted the trophy for Best New Act for their group The O’s, Pedigo gave a big thank you to “DeMarcus Ware.” Marty B did not seem pleased. There was some awkward silence, and he made a crack about how he’s much hotter than DeMarcus. Pedigo, who had been feeding freely from the onstage keg, then said, “I’m just f—ing with you.” Was he really? I don’t know. But I probably would have said the same thing.

After that, I split. It was getting late and, well, I figured Tellus had sufficiently stolen the thunder from the headliner of the night. So, mission accomplished?
