“What are you doing at a Dallas City Council meeting?”
“I’m doing a piece on race relations. Dallas just sort of fits right in…”
Linda Zabilka had spent most of the afternoon waiting to speak to the City Council in favor of speed bumps on the M-Streets, After she had her say, council member Jim Buerger said, “I commend you and the company you work for that lets you off from work to come down here. Who do you work for?”

Velvet hazards: the new purple velvet ropes separating the council from the gallery sometimes prove to be an obstacle to the press. At a council meeting in July, Dallas Morning News staff writer Ed Housewright unhooked the brass hook at the end of one of the ropes to walk through, but then dropped it onto the brass support base of the pole holding the rope. The loud bang interrupted a question to a speaker by council member Lori Palmer, who exclaimed, “My God!”
“You just got the gong,” said the speaker. ..
The Stoneleigh Hotel has great rooms, a cool bar, a nice restaurant, and now there’s more-the Stoneleigh Hearts Club. It seems that more than a few bachelors around town- especially the recently separated or divorced variety-are finding the Stoneleigh the ideal residence. KRLD’s director of sports marketing Jimmy Davis may have started the trend; he moved in six years ago after his divorce and is still there. He’s joined by four other guys, including two newcomers, John Hall and Pete Northway of the Hall Northway and Sco-field advertising agency.
