What I’m Watching: The ‘Boys Are Back in Town

Plus: the Wings shoot for six in a row, and the Rangers look for revenge against the Astros.

It was a banner week in Dallas sports, as the Rangers swept the then AL-leading Rays, Satou Sabally and the Wings took down the Liberty as part of what’s now a five-game win streak, and the Texas Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians New York in front of a sellout crowd (which included several of us here at D Magazine; it was a good time).

Here’s what I’m watching this week.

Monday, 7/24—Cowboys training camp kicks offAll week long, The Internet

Real football is still a month and a half away, but the first taste of it begins today when players report. Will Zack Martin be among them? For now, that’s unclear, but we should have an answer before the first practice on Wednesday. Jake Kemp will have more on the future Hall of Famer then.

Tuesday, 7/25—Wings versus Sun7:00 p.m., YouTube TV

Dallas is the hottest team in the WNBA, and the team’s reconfigured identity around Sabally, Arike Ogunbowale, and Natasha Howard makes this win streak feel bigger than just another run in the win column. So it’s fitting that the next hurdle is Connecticut, who eliminated Dallas from last season’s playoffs. A win would help the Wings tighten their hold on second place in the Western Conference. The symbolic value would be even greater: a measure of revenge for that postseason ouster, as well as an extra bit of confirmation that this franchise is on the rise.

Wednesday, 7/26—Rangers at Astros7:10 p.m., Bally Sports Southwest

Texas’ sweep against Tampa came on the heels of losing two of three against in the teams’ previous meeting. Will a similar bounce back occur in Houston after the Astros took two of three earlier this month in Arlington? If so, the Rangers would widen their three-game lead in the A.L. West to something much less surmountable. They’ll just have to do it without their best player, as Corey Seager will be sidelined for at least the first half of this week (and likely longer) with a sprained thumb suffered against the Dodgers.
