What I’m Watching: A Mavs Playoff Rematch

Will the Mavericks take down the Jazz in this week's playoff rematch? Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports

Bruce Bochy made his first appearance as Rangers manager, the Stars shut down Alex Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals, and Dak Prescott looked back to his best self in the Cowboys’ resounding win over the Bears. Here’s what I’m watching this week:

Tuesday, 11/1—The NFL Trade Deadline3 p.m., The Internet

The Cowboys have already made one beefy move, acquiring 320-pound defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins from Las Vegas for a swap of draft picks. Will there be more happenings before the trade window slams shut tomorrow afternoon? Jerry Jones teased possibly making a splash after yesterday’s win, and the most obvious area of need is wide receiver. Don’t expect a blockbuster on par with acquiring Amari Cooper four years ago. But adding a piece to complement CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup would go a long way to shoring up Dak Prescott’s targets.

Wednesday, 11/3—Mavericks versus Jazz7:30 p.m., Bally Sports Southwest

After shipping out franchise pillars Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, Utah barely resembles the team Dallas defeated in the first round of last season’s NBA playoffs. Somehow, they’ve succeeded anyway, which makes this an important test for a Mavs team searching for momentum along with their first back-to-back wins of the season. On paper, Dallas should take this one. But not much has gone according to plan thus far, now has it?

Saturday, 11/5—Stars at Oilers3 p.m., Bally Sports Southwest

I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it: when the best player in the world is on the Stars’ schedule, you should make time to pay attention. Particularly when it means another chance for a duel with Miro Heiskanen.
