Thumbs Up to the Dallas Ballet Academy for pointedly protecting the future of its students rather than toeing the bottom line on its balance sheet. The Academy, the official school of dance for the Dallas Ballet company, raised prices for its exclusive classes 300 per cent and severely slashed the number of scholarships to meet its leaping deficit. The resistance was tougher than a pair of new toe shoes. Parents, teachers, and students attended a tearful meeting protesting the new fees; they said the increase would cripple their careers by causing many of the best dancers to drop out because of the cost. Henry Holth, president and general manager of the Ballet, then rolled back the increase to a mere 20 per cent, comparable to fees at other studios around town.
