Medical City Adds System C-Suite Leader and Oceans Healthcare Names Chief Medical Officer

Plus UNTHSC's College of Pharmacy's new accreditation and UTSW leader's leadership role at the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

John Thresher is the new chief development and integration officer for Medical City Healthcare. Prior to this role, he served as senior vice president of strategy and development for Medical City Healthcare and brings decades of executive business development, strategy and operations leadership experience to the role. In his new role, Thresher will lead strategic growth initiatives, including physician partnerships, service line development, network integration and other efforts to improve healthcare programs in the communities served by Medical City Healthcare and CareNow Urgent Care.


Dr. James Butler has been announced as the new chief medical officer of Oceans Healthcare, a growing behavioral health provider founded in 2004. Dr. Butler is an organization veteran, most recently serving as the company’s regional medical director. He is also an experienced psychiatrist, bringing extensive knowledge about the role of genetics in the development of mental health challenges to his role, which can help the company’s mission to deliver mental health services to underserved communities.


Ten years after its inaugural class graduated in 2013, The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth’s College of Pharmacy has been granted an eight-year accreditation term until 2031 by The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Eight years is the maximum allowed time for an accreditation. The achievement signifies that the school’s college of pharmacy meets or exceeds the rigorous standards set by the ACPE. In recent years, the college has also experienced growth in research funding, pushing its institutional total research ranking up from No. 52 to No. 38 among 142 colleges of pharmacy in the U.S.


Dr. Joan Conaway, vice provost and dean of basic research at UT Southwestern Medical Center, has been elected as the president-elect of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), one of the largest scientific societies in the world. Dr. Conaway has been involved in leadership with ASBMB before as a speaker, organizer of annual meetings an editorial board member, and associate editor of the society’s flagship publication, Journal of Biological Chemistry. He was recently a member of the society’s finance committee and on its council as treasurer. In her new role, she will serve on ASBMB’s Council, overseeing the day-to-day management of the society, and work closely with ASBMB member committees and staff responsible for many of the society’s activities. In addition to Dr. Conaway’s election, Dr. Russell DeBose-Boyd, professor of molecular genetics at UT Southwestern, was appointed interim Treasurer for ASBMB. He will serve as interim treasurer until July 2024. He was also elected to ASBMB’s Nominating Committee.
