It is, officially, Larry Hagman Day. As Brad already noted, his final episode of the new Dallas airs tonight. But in remembrance, I’d take a quick moment to read back through this awesome interview Hagman did with the Times a few years ago.
Spring break is upon us, and both Oil & Cotton and the Lab at Lakewood are offering the kind of camps I’d happily attend as a presumptive adult. There’s morning, afternoon, and all day options for keeping kiddos educationally occupied during their week of freedom.
Tonight, however, Shakespeare Dallas and the AT&T Performing Arts Center roll along in their quest to conquer the Bard’s complete works. They’re deep into his War of the Roses series, staging Henry VI, Part II this evening in the Winspear Opera House’s smaller performance space. If you’ll remember back to Henry VI, Part I, there was trouble brewing. Now King Henry is less a couple of French territories and still struggling to control his squabbling nobleman as the country marches steadily toward war. Now, this particular play has the distinction of being one of the Bard’s most populated pieces: more than 50 characters who run the gamut from priests to murderers. No wonder Henry was having so much trouble keeping these jokers in line.
Meanwhile, happy nearby news: Lark on the Park is officially taking reservations for dinner service starting this evening. Everything looks nice, except I have one question. Was it really imperative to carry on the Wyly Theatre’s weird puke green color scheme with the chairs and the barstools? Oh well. Carol Shih says the bar itself is “sexy.”
Elsewhere, theater troupe Nouveau 47 continues their world premiere production of Austin playwright Sarah Saltwick’s She Creatures with a rare Monday night performance, which is usually done so other “industry” folks can make it out. The last show I saw in this little Fair Park space, On the Eve, was excellent. This one follows Pandora as she navigates an otherworld filled with dragons, unicorns, and mermaids. Dinner and drinks at Meridian Room should round out the evening just fine.
