Just as with everyone else grappling with the coronavirus, the Dallas Farmers Market is heeding advice from the city and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and taking things day by day. But, as of right now, the show—er, market—must go on.
“We have over 200 small businesses and their livelihoods depends on the market,” says Dallas Farmers Market VP of operations Emily Valentino. But the market will look a little different to ensure customers keep safe distances and don’t gather in large clusters:
- Every booth will be spread further apart.
- There won’t be large dining areas or as much seating (which also makes more room for booth distance).
- Sampling will be suspended.
- Many of the food vendors prepare their eats to-go anyway, but without seating, there will be a heavier emphasis on takeaway.
- The market’s installed additional hand washing stations outside, both for vendors and farmers as well as customers. They’ve also provided hand sanitizer and gloves to all of their vendors. Increased cleaning frequency at tables and booths.
- DFM’s programming, especially events for little kids, are on hold and will be rescheduled for the summer.
“We’re excited and we’re just trying to provide food for people,” says Valentino. “Our message is still to support the community…to buy farm-direct food knowing where it’s coming from.” We can practice good common sense hygiene, support local businesses, and get through this. And if we can get through it with a basket of fresh strawberries, well, all the better.
