James Dondero has spent his more than 30-year career founding and growing companies in the investment management and financial services industries. In that time, he built several integrated businesses to manage investments in credit, real estate, and private equity. In 2012, Dondero and his team established NexPoint to provide differentiated access to alternative investments across a range of asset classes and fund structures.

The firm was built around real estate, which remains the largest asset class represented across NexPoint’s platform today. Under Dondero’s leadership, NexPoint has grown its real estate business from an initial focus in the multifamily space, to a broad range of real estate assets and property types.

In recent years, Dondero has added marquee North Texas properties to NexPoint’s real estate portfolio. This includes the former EDS headquarters in Plano, which NexPoint aims to convert to a life science campus. The proposed Texas Research Quarter project would bring cutting-edge research and manufacturing activity to North Texas, generating tens of thousands of jobs across Plano and the surrounding region.

Dondero’s impact on the region can also be seen in his philanthropic work. Since he moved to Dallas in 1994, Dondero has supported education, economic and community development, and many civic and cultural institutions in the DFW area. “As a business, we’ve been a major beneficiary of the ongoing growth in the Dallas area,” said Dondero. “Through our philanthropy, we want to help make sure the benefits of that growth are felt across our community.”
