Have It” (October). Woodstockian? I am a typical, middle-class suburban mother of two, happily married to an engineer. Like Laura and her husband, most of rny students are well-educated professionals. Laura’s article hurt. Not just me, but many other dedicated and caring individuals who teach the Bradley Method. We are committed to supporting and empowering parents. We are not here to frighten them.

In the Bradley workbook there are two full pages on positive communication with your birth team. Cooperation is what we teach, and options are what we offer. I honor the choices Laura made during her birth process. I only wish she could honor other women’s choices.

CARROLLTON

As students in the Bradley Childbirth Education class which Laura Miller attended and wrote about, we take issue with many of her comments, Our instructor, Suzanne Johnsen, said up front that there is no failure in childbirth, regardless of whether it’s natural, medicated, or Cesarean.

We never heard Suzanne say there would not be pain. The emphasis was on preparation, physically and mentally, to help in dealing with the pain. While we did not agree with everything in the course, we are grateful to Suzanne and Bradley.

Notes From The Front

I have just finished reading Chris Tucker’s “Someone Else’s War” (October) and wholeheartedly agree. I am now part of the planning which will decide on the life and death of the men I command. It’s so easy sitting at home with a beer in your hand and dictating the ’”Big Picture” for our next military excursion, but it’s different when you sit out here, watching the Iraqis day in and day out, waiting for the word to go over the top. Next time you are planning strategy back at the old watering hole, stop a minute and think about us in a real world context. As an old Vietnam vet told me years ago, “You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?” Now I understand. Good article.

By the way, it’s amazing where D Magazine shows up sometimes.
