PEOPLE Opera Man

|

You’re shopping in Oak Lawn. The guy standing next to you opens his mouth to comment about the fine melons, and out come the most gorgeous, deep, mellifluous tones you’ve ever heard. You may have encountered one of the city’s best-kept secrets: bass Eric Halfvarson, 43, one of opera’s superstars and The Washington Opera’s “Artist of the Year” in 1992.

Halfvarson “fled” New York City in 1990 to make Dallas his permanent base of operations. That year he performed in three Dallas Opera productions, met his future wife (WRR-FM announcer SusanOwens-by), and decided to stay.

Halfvarson has staned twice this season at the Met and will spend the summer in Gennany performing three of the four Wagner “Ring” operas. He’s not scheduled to perform with the Dallas Opera until next December, but hopes to arrange a recital in the area soon. In the meantime, he’s scouting local fishing sites and “trying very hard to learn all the words to ’The Yellow Rose of Texas.”’
